Hydraulic Block Making Machine or Automatic Concrete Block Machine? Which Should You Buy

I've managed purchasing for a building-materials company since 2020. We produce blocks, pavers and precast elements across two sites, and I handle roughly $700,000 worth of annual buying — cement, aggregates, machine parts and capital equipment. In 2021, we bought an automatic concrete block line. In 2023, we added a hydraulic block press for soil-cement products and pavers. I'm not a machine engineer; I'm the person who approves the purchase and lives with the result.

If you've searched for a cement block machine, you've probably noticed something confusing: the same search returns a compact hydraulic press and a fully automatic production line, and both call themselves block making machines. They are not two versions of the same tool. They work differently, cost differently, and make economic sense under very different conditions.

Some suppliers only sell one type, and they'll give you ten reasons why the other type is wrong. What they rarely ask is the only question that matters: how many blocks can you actually sell, day after day, and what kinds of blocks? This article compares both the way I would compare them for another purchase today.

The Technology Difference in Plain Language

Hydraulic block making machine (a press)

Think of a large press. A hydraulic block making machine fills a mould with a semi-dry mix — often cement and sand, or soil stabilized with cement — then a hydraulic ram compresses it under high pressure. The block is formed by pressure and can be demoulded immediately. Typical cycle times are between 10 and 30 seconds per mould fill, and small-to-mid-sized presses produce roughly 1,500 to 4,000 standard-size blocks per shift, depending on the number of mould cavities and how the machine is fed.

Moulds can be swapped to produce solid blocks, hollow blocks, interlocking bricks, pavers and curbstone. If you see the term soil brick making machine, this is usually the category it describes.

Automatic concrete block machine (a complete system)

An automatic concrete block machine is different. It uses a mould that vibrates at high speed to compact zero-slump concrete in a few seconds. The vibration densifies the mix, and the top beam applies some pressure. The formed block lands on a steel pallet and is moved out to the curing area. When a supplier quotes a hollow automatic concrete block making machine, they're usually quoting a full system: batching plant or mixer, skip hoist or conveyor, the block machine itself, pallets, and often stacking equipment.

Nearly all of these machines also use hydraulics for moving the mould and top beam, so don't get stuck on the word 'hydraulic' in product names. And don't confuse the machine with the complete system. An automatic line is a cement block production machine in the fullest sense: it only runs as well as the concrete supply, pallet flow and curing capacity around it.

The Five Comparisons That Actually Matter

1. Rated capacity vs. real demand

Start with the spec because it's easy. For 390x190x190 hollow blocks, many automatic models advertise 4,000 to 10,000 pieces per 8-hour shift. Basic models we reviewed start around 4,000, and larger ones go much higher. Real output on most sites is lower — usually 70 to 85 percent of rated output once you account for concrete supply delays, mould cleaning, shift changes and small stoppages.

Our hydraulic press advertises 2,000 to 3,500 bricks per shift for solid interlocking soil-cement bricks. We usually achieve 1,500 to 2,800, depending on mix and manpower. For a small construction business, that level of output is often enough. For a commercial block yard selling to dozens of builders, it isn't.

Here's the point nobody puts in the brochure: an automatic line only becomes profitable if you can keep it busy. If you expect to sell fewer than 2,000 to 3,000 blocks per day on most days, buying an automatic machine is like buying a truck fleet to drive one package across town each morning.

2. Product range and mould change time

This is the dimension where the cheaper machine often wins, and it surprises most first-time buyers. A hydraulic press with a good mould system is genuinely flexible. We change moulds in roughly 30 to 50 minutes and can run interlocking bricks in the morning and pavers after lunch. That flexibility matters when your orders come in small batches, as they do for most small and mid-sized builders.

An automatic concrete block machine is built for repetition. Changing the mould on our auto line took most of a shift once, because we also had to adjust pallet stops, stacking settings and curing arrangements for a different block height. If you produce the same hollow block day after day, that's irrelevant. If you need variety, it hurts.

My honest conclusion: more automation usually means less flexibility in practice, even though the sales presentation makes it sound like the opposite.

3. Total capital and the cost per block

Now the part buyers ask about first. During January 2025, I reviewed export quotes from several machinery suppliers for a procurement update. Prices vary significantly by brand, automation level and included equipment, so treat the numbers below as planning ranges, not quotes. Verify current pricing before you rely on it.

A hydraulic block making machine setup — press, basic mixer, a few moulds and modest site works — commonly lands in the $25,000 to $60,000 range installed, depending on the size of the press and local civil works. The machine alone is often quoted at $8,000 to $30,000.

A complete automatic system is a different budget. For the block former, batching mixer, skip hoist, conveyor and basic accessories, quotes often start around $70,000 to $90,000. Once you add steel pallets, curing racks, a forklift or loader, electrical works and a concrete yard, a realistic installed figure is frequently $150,000 to $300,000.

Don't compare those numbers directly. Compare depreciation per block. Suppose the automatic system costs $120,000 more than the hydraulic setup. Spread over seven years, that's roughly $17,000 per year before interest, maintenance and insurance. If the line produces 200,000 blocks a year, that's about $0.09 per block just for the extra machine cost. If it produces 600,000 blocks a year, it's about $0.03. That single calculation tells you why utilization matters more than sticker price.

4. Power, site and labour requirements

The question everyone asks is, 'What's the machine price?' The question I should have asked on our first automatic line was, 'What does the site need before the machine arrives?'

A mid-sized hydraulic press typically needs 20 to 40 kW of installed power. Many smaller models run on 380V three-phase, and some can be configured for sites with limited supply. Site preparation is usually a concrete slab, a shed, water and a simple curing area.

An automatic concrete block line is hungrier. Installed power is often 80 to 150 kW, and you need reliable three-phase power, often with a dedicated transformer. On our first auto line, we didn't discover until after the order that the local transformer was too small. We paid about $9,000 for an upgrade and waited five weeks. The machine sat in its crate while the costs piled up.

You also need more space: aggregate stockpiles, a cement silo, batching area, block curing area, pallet storage and room for a forklift. Labour is different too. The hydraulic press needs more hands, but the tasks are simple. The automatic line needs fewer operators but at least one person who understands electrical controls and can troubleshoot the machine when it stops.

5. Spare parts, maintenance and supplier support

This is the dimension everyone skips, and it's the one that decides whether your machine is a profit centre or a monument.

A hydraulic press is mostly standard components: hydraulic seals, hoses, valves, bearings and motor parts. In most industrial towns, a local hydraulic shop can rebuild a cylinder or replace a valve. The parts you should stock are seals, filters and mould liners.

An automatic line has all of that plus sensors, PLCs, frequency inverters, pallet feeders and stacker systems. When something electronic fails, you often need the manufacturer's support. Ask flat-out: where are spare parts stocked, how fast can they reach your site, and does the supplier have a local service contact? If the answer is vague, that's a risk, not a detail.

For both types, ask for reference installations near you and call them. A reference plant that says the supplier responds within days is worth more than any brochure claim.

A Quick Clarification: Soil Bricks vs. Fired Clay Bricks

If you've also been searching for a soil brick making machine or looking at clay brick machine manufacturers, stop for a minute. These are different products with different processes.

A soil brick making machine in most supplier catalogues is a compressed stabilized earth block machine. It presses soil mixed with 5 to 10 percent cement into unfired blocks. Those blocks cure, they don't go through a kiln. They can work well for housing in suitable soil conditions, but the soil needs to be tested. You can't just press any dirt and expect durable bricks.

Fired clay bricks are another world. If your project or local building code requires fired clay brick, you need to talk to clay brick machine manufacturers about an entirely different package: pug mill, extruder, brick cutter, drying system and kiln. That is a much larger investment and a different operating rhythm. Don't buy a clay brick line because you want cement blocks, and don't buy a cement block press because you need fired clay bricks. Decide the product first.

So Which One Should You Buy?

Here's my practical answer after doing this twice:

Choose a hydraulic block making machine if: you need blocks mainly for your own construction projects; your expected daily output is below 2,000 to 3,000 pieces; you need several block types and don't mind changing moulds often; your site doesn't have heavy three-phase power; or you want to start production without taking on large debt.

Choose an automatic concrete block machine if: you already have confirmed, repeatable demand for a high volume of hollow blocks or pavers — ideally 100,000 pieces or more per month; you have the site, power supply, curing area and material handling equipment; and you have access to someone who can maintain a PLC-controlled machine without waiting weeks for a technician.

Before you sign anything, get these answers in writing: the rated output for the exact block size you plan to make, installed power requirements, mould change time, the spare parts list with prices, and contact details of two installations you can visit or call. Also ask about current lead times and what documentation they provide with the machine.

One last thing. As a smaller buyer, don't accept being treated like a nuisance. Some suppliers only care about big orders, and they usually reveal that before you pay. When we placed our first small order, the supplier that answered our questions properly and shared exact specifications was the one that got our follow-up orders later. If a manufacturer can't give you serious attention before they have your money, expect even less after.
