What Most Buyers Don't See Coming
When you're looking at a John Deere electric riding mower for a commercial property, or a used 690 excavator for a job site, the surface-level specs—engine hours, tire condition, visual wear—tend to dominate attention. That's natural. They're the easiest things to evaluate.
But in my experience, the expensive surprises come from things you can't see in a photo.
- Parts availability for older models. We bought a 2018 model once that used a discontinued hydraulic filter. The cross-reference didn't exist. That simple part took four weeks to source.
- Software and calibration issues. A used machine might come with outdated firmware that limits performance or prevents attachment recognition. Dealerships can update it, but that's not always included in the price.
- Incomplete service history. 'Regularly maintained' in a listing doesn't mean what you think it means. Without records, it's an assumption you're paying for.
From my perspective, the biggest hidden risk is parts compatibility. Not because parts are hard to find—John Deere's OEM parts network is extensive—but because verifying compatibility before purchase takes 10 minutes, and skipping it can cost weeks.

Looking back, I should have called the dealer's service department and asked two questions:
- "Can you confirm the auxiliary hydraulic circuit version on serial number [X]?"
- "Are there any outstanding service bulletins or updates for this model year?"
That's it. That's the whole pre-purchase checklist. Two questions. Five minutes.
If I could redo that decision, I'd make that call every time. But given what I knew then—nothing about the quirks of that particular model year—my shortcut seemed reasonable. It wasn't.
Now I have a strict policy: Every used machine gets a serial-number-based compatibility check before purchase approval. It's saved us an estimated $8,000 in potential rework since 2023.
Why I Still Buy John Deere
You might think this story would make me wary of the brand. Actually, the opposite.
The machine itself was solid. The issue wasn't the equipment—it was my assumption that "one excavator is basically like another." They're not. Model years, even within the same line like the 690 excavator, can have different hydraulic configurations and attachment requirements.
I have mixed feelings about that experience. On one hand, it was an expensive lesson. On the other, it taught me to respect the specifics of each machine—and that's made me a better buyer.
The OEM parts availability and dealer support from John Deere are genuinely good. The problem was me, not the brand. I just didn't ask for help soon enough.
